Reviews of "Nostradamus" NIKOLO KOTZEV’S NOSTRADAMUS (Steamhammer/ SPV) A rock music gem 5/5 Reviewer: A music fan from UK The virtuoso guitarist, Nikolo Kotzev, has produced a rock music gem with 'Nostradamus'. As having conceived, wrote, arranged and produced the album, he also plays violin, keyboards and percussion as well! Behind Nikolo are John Leven (bass), Ian Haugland (drums) and Mic Michaeli (organ) - all of whom were in both the band Europe and Kotzev's own band, Brazen Abbot - and they provide a strong supporting structure to the music. A fabulous cast of singers has been assembled too; the "voice of rock" Glenn Hughes gives of his best as does that other stalwart singer, Joe Lynne Turner. The voices of Goran Edman and Jorn Lande are new to me, but they are names I will look out for in the future as they both do an excellent job. Also appearing are Sass Jordan, Alannah Myles and Doogie White who complement and complete the line-up. The music is guitar-led heavy rock at its best with a rich and full, yet melodic sound, and the 35 piece symphonic orchestra provides an ornate background to the band and, on their own, a more flowery, classical sound. The album opens with the orchestral 'Overture' into which guitar chords mingle and lead into the first Glenn Hughes number - a terrific opening ... and so it continues: each of the singers play their part well, all of the songs are strong, and the album just sounds better each time you listen. The Cd comes with a huge booklet that has all of the lyrics and explanatory notes between the tracks giving a background to the action, and these are a great help in following the story. 'Nostradamus' is brilliant album that should be in every rock fan's collection ... buy it and play it loud! Eine perfekte Rockoper 5/5 Reviewer: Helge Sperling Es gab in letzter Zeit viele Versuche, harten Rock und Klassik zu verbinden. Einen der besten hört man auf dieser CD. Alles ist vorhanden, eine wirklich gute Story, hervoragende Rockmusik, Klassik-Einlagen, die nicht nur Beiwerk sind und sehr gute gesangliche Leistungen. Mit Glenn Hughes und Joe Lynn Turner (beides ehemalige Deep Purple-Mitglieder) hat der bulgarische Gitarrist Nikolo Kotzev zwei der besten Rock-Sänger an Bord. Erweitert wird das Line Up, das seine Rockoper "Nostradamus" eingespielt und eingesungen hat, durch Dougie White (Rainbow), Göran Edman (ex-Malmsteen), Jorn Lande (Company Of Snakes, TNT) sowie Alannah Miles und Sass Jordan. Als Instrumentalisten konnte Kotzev die ehemaligen Europe-Musiker Ian Haughland, John Leven und Mic Michaeli gewinnen. Hier geht es um den Propheten Michel de Notre-Dame, der in spannender Weise Weissagungen über den weiteren Verlauf der Welt-Geschichte tätigte. Story sowie Musik lassen nie die nötige Spannung u. Sobald man dieses Album in seinen CD-Player gelegt hat fällt einem automatisch die Kinnlade runter!!! Das fängt allein schon damit an wer auf diesem Album seine Sangeskünste unter Beweis stellt: Joe Lynn Turner als Nostradamus, Glenn Hughes als Henry der 2., dazu noch Jorn Lande an Inquisitor und Allanah Myles als Anne Gemelle die Frau Nostradamus` !!(natürlich wirken noch weitere Gäste mit :-)) Intelligente Arrangements, bombastische Chöre und eine gute Produktion machen das ganze zu einem Hörerlebnis das seinesgleichen sucht (mal abgesehen von "Avantasia")!!! Das ganze wurde von dem Multiinstrumentalisten Nikolo Kotzev (der das Album im Alleingang geschrieben hat)und den ehemaligen Europemitgliedern John Leven, Mic Michaeli und Ian Haugland eingespielt und man merkt daß sich diese Musiker gesucht und gefunden haben: sie spielen präzise wie ein Uhrwerk!! Die Geschichte handelt von Nostradamus und seinen Prophezeiungen und den Zeitgeschehnissen von damals und ist somit weit fernab von diversen Rock-Klischees. Herausheben kann man eigentlich gar kein Lied aber ziemlich geil ist das Duett zwischen Hughes und Turner bei "The Chosen Man", aber was red ich die Leute die eine Rock-Oper hören wollen (die ihren Namen auch wirklich verdient!!) rennen am besten JETZT in den nächsten CD-Laden und kaufen sich dieses Hammeralbum noch heute und wenn nicht dann entgeht ihnen ein Meisterwerk der Rockgeschichte, das mindestens 10 Sterne verdient hätte!!!! Wir haben es hier mit einem Konzeptalbum zu tun, dass einem nur noch die Ohren wegblasen kann. Nikolo Kotzev (ex-Baltimore, Brazen Abot) hat einige der besten Rock-Sänger und Sängerinnen zusammengeführt um uns die spannende Geschichte von Herrn Nostradamus zu erzählen. Jeder Sänger repräsentiert eine Gestalt. Joe Lynn Turner ( unter anderem Malmsteen, Deep Purple) trägt hier die Rolle von Nostradamus himself. The Voice of Rock, Glenn Hughes wurde die Rolle des Königs Henry 2 zugeteilt. Unterstützt werden diese von ex-Europe Mitgliedern und einem Orchester von 35 Leuten. Ihr werdet sehen, nach ein paar Durchgängen verlässt dieses Album nie wieder ihren CD-Player. Man braucht nicht zu erwähnen, dass diese Scheibe in jeden CD-Schrank gehört. Also, ihr wisst was ihr zu tun habt! Nikolo Kotzev - Nostradamus 5/5 Reviewer: Fred Monster Nikolo Kotzev has impressed me several times with his albums under the Brazen Abbot moniker. People like Göran Edman, Joe Lynn Turner, Glenn Hughes and the ex-Europe members John Levén, Ian Haugland and Mic Michaeli have been involved in this project on several occasions. All big names, which provided these releases with great class. No wonder that Nikolo chose to work with these individuals again on his biggest project up to now: Nostradamus. Not only that, he added much respected musicians like Alannah Myles, Sass Jordan, Jorn Lande and Doogie White to the line up as well. And let's not forget a thirty-five piece symphonic orchestra. As the title says the album deals with the life and times of the famous visionary Nostradamus who forecasted events like WWI and II as well as a third one and ultimately the end of the world. Every singer plays a character in the story: Allannah Myles is Anne Cemelle, Nostradamus' wife, Sass Jordan is Catherine, Queen Of France, Göran Edman is the Ghost, Glenn Hughes is Henry II, King Of France, Jorn Lande the Inquisitor, Joe Lynn Turner plays Nostradamus and Doogie White is the Storyteller, while the choir plays both the People and the Inquisition. I've listened to more than a few rock operas in my life, but the huge all-star line up alone makes this one very special. It's just plain fabulous to hear Jorn Lande, Joe Lynn Turner and Allannah Myles together in one song. Or Turner and the mighty Glenn Hughes. And you'll hear it all on Nostradamus! It took Nikolo four years to complete this ingenious piece of music. In fact he planned to release it about a year ago, but it's been worth the extra year of waiting, I can assure you that. Musically Nostradamus has everything that people who are heavily into Deep Purple and Rainbow, as well as the Brazen Abbot albums, will love because it brings you exactly that kind of music and more. It'll take you several listens to get into the album, but it deserves just that. It's hard for me to really point out my favorite tracks on the album, as I think the album should be listened as a whole. Songs like Henriette, World War II and III and I'll Remember You have just this little extra something compared to the rest, though so if I had to choose I think I would stick to those four. But the overall class on this album is so high that I can't say anything less than that Nostradamus is an essential album for fans of Classic European Hardrock. NIKOLO KOTZEV is absolute genius! Amazon.fr Après avoir inspiré moult bouquins parfaitement débiles, la vie du célèbre Nostradamus sert ici de prétexte à un opéra-rock en trois actes répartis sur un double CD pour durée totale d'une heure quarante. Or, si le nom d'Avantasia vient immédiatement à l'esprit, notamment parce que Nikolo Kotzev, un guitariste/claviériste bulgare exilé en Finlande, s'est offert les services de six chanteurs (dont Glenn Hughes, Joe Lynn Turner et Göran Edman) pour enregistrer son œuvre, ou parce que le contexte historique est globalement similaire, il convient de relativiser les choses. Avant d'aller concurrencer Tobias Sammet sur son terrain, Nikolo a en effet sorti trois albums avec son projet solo Brazen Abbot, sur lesquels il travaillait déjà avec la plupart de ses complices d'aujourd'hui et changeait de chanteur d'un morceau à l'autre. En outre, Avantasia oscille entre le metal prog et le speed mélodique, alors que Nostradamus donne dans le hard rock à la Rainbow et le hard progressif à la Kansas, ce qui n'est pas sans conséquence sur le nombre et la nature des intervenants : dans Avantasia, les arrangements classiques sont sobres et samplés, tandis que, dans Nostradamus, ils sont omniprésents et assurés par un orchestre symphonique de trente-cinq musiciens. En revanche, l'un comme l'autre restent majoritairement une affaire d'hommes – Sass Jordan chante sur un titre de Nostradamus et Alannah Myles sur deux, point barre !
